Zapata Cantina menu

Casa Noble Anejo

Remarkably complex, our Añejo tequila is an elegant and aromatic expression, created with both patience and extreme attention to detail.

US$13.00

Pasote Anejo

The experience begins with a decadently rich mouthfeel that’s velvety smooth. Long barrel aging mellows the character of the roasted agave, bringing out hints of cooked caramel, dried fruits, and coffee for a finely nuanced complexity.

US$13.00

Camarena Anejo

Pronounced aromas of toasted oak, nutmeg, baked apple and citrus with flavors of roasted sweet potato, rich vanilla and caramel – a smooth finish.

US$8.00

Camarena Reposado

Aged in oak barrels for 60 days. Soft and smooth on the palate imparting flavors of vanilla and caramel onto Camarena’s natural agave sweetness and notes of soft spice.

US$7.00

123 Organic Tequila Anejo (Tres)

After eighteen months in oak, Tres' wood character is more prominent, and on first blush it is heady on the nose with tannin and wood oil notes. This fades after time in the glass, revealing richer versions of those characteristics in the Reposado: caramel and some chocolate notes. A lovely anejo, it really opens up when you give it time.

US$16.00

Casa Mexico Anejo

Tequila aficionados appreciate the initial caramel notes and subsequent smooth American oak flavors that are produced by this uniquely nuanced spirit.

US$12.00

Tres Generaciones Anejo

Full and balanced. Starts with brown sugar, fades soft oak and clean agave

US$12.00

Patron Anejo

Oak aged for over 12 months to produce a tequila perfect for sipping.

US$15.00

Discover Zapata Cantina

Walking into Zapata Cantina for the first time felt like stepping into a neighborhood spot that already knew me. I stopped by on a busy Friday evening after work, and despite the crowd, the staff moved with a calm rhythm that comes from experience. Located at 801 Madison Ave, Covington, KY 41011, United States, the restaurant sits right in the middle of a lively area where locals bounce between bars, diners, and live music venues. What stood out immediately was the energy-casual, friendly, and unpretentious, the kind of place where regulars are greeted by name and first-timers feel welcome within minutes.

The menu leans heavily into Mexican-inspired comfort food, with tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and house-made salsas leading the charge. On my visit, I watched a small group next to me debate their order based on past experiences, which is always a good sign. One of them mentioned they come back weekly because the flavors stay consistent, something that matters more than flashy presentation. I ordered carne asada tacos and a side of chips with salsa. The meat was well-seasoned, cooked hot and fast, and topped simply, letting the ingredients do the talking. According to the National Restaurant Association, consistency is one of the top three reasons customers return to a restaurant, and it’s clear this kitchen understands that principle in practice.

What impressed me most was how the staff handled volume. Orders were taken quickly, food came out hot, and mistakes were corrected without hesitation. A server explained that their process focuses on prepping proteins and sauces fresh daily, then finishing dishes to order so nothing sits too long. That method aligns with best practices shared by culinary educators like the Culinary Institute of America, which emphasizes freshness and timing as key drivers of quality and safety. You can taste that approach in every bite, especially in their slow-simmered beans and rice, which don’t feel like afterthoughts.

Reviews from locals often highlight the relaxed vibe and fair pricing, and after several visits, I agree. This isn’t a place trying to reinvent Mexican cuisine. Instead, it delivers bold, familiar flavors in a setting where you can unwind. A friend of mine brought her family here during a weekend visit, and the staff adjusted spice levels for the kids without making a fuss. That kind of flexibility builds trust, especially for diners who might be cautious about heat or unfamiliar ingredients.

Drinks deserve a mention too. The margaritas are balanced rather than overly sweet, and the rotating specials keep things interesting. One bartender told me they adjust recipes based on customer feedback, which reflects a broader industry trend. Research published by Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration shows that restaurants actively responding to guest preferences see higher satisfaction and repeat visits. It’s a small detail, but it shows a willingness to listen rather than stick rigidly to a formula.

The atmosphere ties everything together. Music plays at a level where conversation still matters, and the décor feels lived-in rather than staged. It’s easy to linger, especially when sharing plates with friends. I’ve overheard countless conversations that start with food and end with plans to come back next week. That organic word-of-mouth is echoed across online reviews, where people consistently mention friendly service, dependable food, and a sense of community.

Of course, no place is perfect. Seating can feel tight during peak hours, and parking nearby requires patience. Still, those minor inconveniences are common for popular spots in walkable neighborhoods. Based on repeated visits, conversations with staff, and the steady stream of regulars, this cantina has earned its reputation honestly. It delivers bold flavors worth craving, a laid-back neighborhood feel, and service that actually listens, which explains why so many people keep coming back.

  • The food as well as the drinks are well-made-it was quite obvious they care was put into the preparation. The space was absolutely beautiful; it was inviting and very clean. The cleanliness was comparable to a restaurant that was opened within the past month. Our bartender was very friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend a visit. Delicious!

  • Love this Cantina that is just a short walk from Hotel Covington! Our visit was excellent and the service was great. The team working gave some great recommendations for cocktails and margs and they were quick to check on each of their tables to ensure every customer felt welcomed. Highly recommend coming here if you’re a small group - quick seating, quick service, and great food and drink! The ceviche was excellent!

  • Great place for a modern Mexican meal. We had a combination of dishes from Pollo Monterrey and Flautas to firecracker shrimp and Chicharrones. As we enjoyed our drinks the chef came out with a complimentary hors d’oeuvre that he was looking for our input on…It was great!!! Service and atmosphere are excellent.

  • What a refreshing take on tacos on Madison. Finally a 'fancy taco' restaurant with a manageable menu, dedicated staff and reasonable prices. More menu items than tacos too, as seen in the photos. We will all return. Also, fantastic tequila selection. Very comfortable space, clean, attentive staff.

  • Our waiter was great! Cute restaurant. The menu was very small but the food and drinks were good. The waiter said everything is made in house. Wish the burrito came with beans or something on the side rather than just the burrito. Chips and salsa are not included but you get a good variety with the option for purchase. Went around 6:00pm on a Saturday and was seated immediately.

  • Got some lunch here that was pretty solid. The food itself was delicious. I got the burrito which was very filling. One of my friends got the shrimp tacos which actually had huge portions on them and looked really good. The atmosphere was fun. Very clean and and good amount of tables. Only downside was the price. Just a little too expensive for what it was in my mind. Not too bad though.

  • From the time you walk in, you immediately feel welcomed by the attentive staff. The menu is fantastic and authentic. The specials are amazing, from octopus to ribeye, Chef Robert works his magic and the flavor pallete is mouthwatering. Happy eating!!!
